LogRhythm Implementation at Ventura Brings PCI DSS Compliance and Unprecedented Network Visibility

Integrated SIEM solution transforms how IT infrastructure and applications are monitored and managed

7 April 2010 – Ventura, a subsidiary of Next Group and one of the UK’s largest customer management outsourcers, has implemented a log management, analysis and event management solution from LogRhythm. The integrated Security Information Event Management (SIEM) solution is ensuring that Ventura achieves and demonstrates Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance. Additionally, LogRhythm has enabled Ventura to carry out complex analyses of log and event information to identify any anomalies in real-time.

Employing over 8,000 people, Ventura provides customer management, debt management, sales and revenue generation, document management, IT services and business solutions to an array of blue chip and government organisations, including O2, Sky and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Accessing log and event data for compliance or security investigation purposes had always been a laborious and time consuming task for Ventura. This was because log and event data were held in various formats on each of Ventura’s heterogeneous IT systems which required separate interrogation in order to be accessed.

Ventura recognised the value that an integrated SIEM solution would offer in terms of simplifying and reducing the time taken to access and analyse log data. After assessing a number of options, Ventura’s decision to implement LogRhythm was based on the system’s integration capabilities and simplicity to use.

Mark Wityszyn, IT security manager, Ventura comments: “LogRhythm has given us network visibility, transforming how we monitor and manage our IT infrastructure and applications. By continually monitoring network activity and flagging potential problems as and when they occur, LogRhythm assures us that there are no network issues that we are unaware of. Today, we can carry out full and detailed log analysis within a couple of hours”

Beyond PCI DSS compliance, Ventura is using LogRhythm to monitor activity on the separate systems it operates on behalf of its clients. LogRhythm correlates and consolidates the information for each system, identifying any unusual behaviour and giving Ventura’s IT security team full insight into system activity for each client. Not only does the system alert on any anomalies and produce easily interpreted reports, it also provides reassurance to Ventura’s clients that the company is monitoring and managing its systems in an efficient and effective manner.

Ventura plans to extend the use of LogRhythm beyond the IT security team to its network administrators and internal web development teams – who can test their programming for potential network issues without having to wait until the end of the development cycle – bringing additional efficiencies, time savings and enhanced application development.

Ross Brewer, vice president and managing director, APAC & EMEA, LogRhythm, adds: “Our integrated SIEM solution provides much greater value beyond compliance and IT security. Companies such as Ventura are increasingly recognising the impact that such technology can bring to the business bottom line, for example through improved operational efficiency, time saving analysis or business agility such as more rapid evaluation of the impact new web applications may have on network performance.”
